THE POWER OF SOCIAL MEDIA
In these days when everything is fast – from foods to communication – it seems that it is just a matter of time that slow motion and slow pace will become a thing of the past. With almost everyone having computer notebooks, gone are the days of telegrams and letters. One writer quipped: “The Internet generation connects everyone 24/7 on the internet. The blinking red light of a Blackberry is now a part of life.” Facebook, twitter, instagram, and computer games – name it, you can have it. Social media, if you call it that way, will soon be the new normal instead of an exception. A new day is dawning. Are you looking for something? Do you need some information? Do you want to know what is happening in other parts of the world? Are you looking for direction? In the coming days, a social media conference will be held right in Davao City, touted to be the country’s largest city. “In this conference, you’ll learn to create the right buzz to get people talking about you, your business, product, or service,” explained SHIFT Philippines, the social and digital medial learning organization in the country. “Virtual communities or social networking sites are proving to be a powerful online marketing venue to target, build relationships and grow your network and community,” SHIFT further said. Anyone can attend this conference, said Perry Paul Lamanilao, SHIFT’s co-founder. “There is something for everyone, particularly those who have interest in social media and digital media industry,” he added. Expected to attend include industry professionals (to further hone their skills), media practitioners (who are interested in learning the newest developments), social media enthusiasts and analysts, teachers and professors, and mass communication and business students. According to Lamanilao, the conference will have a live streaming online through YouTube. Among the live points and remote venues are the University of the Immaculate Concepcion in Bonifacio, University of Mindanao in Bolton, University of Southeastern Philippines, San Pedro College, Holy Cross of Davao College, and John Paul II College of Davao. “This will be the first time to happen in Davao City with interschool online participants through social media platforms,” he said. In the conference, a variety of renowned speakers from the social media spectrum will present their thoughts on the subject they are familiar with. Engr. Jaypee David, community leader of digital marketing from the country’s biggest mobile network provider, Globe Telecom, will talk on “Travel, Photography, and Social Media.” Respected journalist Maria Ressa, founder and chief executive officer of Rappler, Inc. will tackle on the issue of “The Power of Social Media.” Celebrity and television host Bianca Gonzales will share her expertise on “Building Online Community.” Atty. Yves Gonzalez, technology and media Consultant of Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will explore the world of “Social Government.” Other confirmed speakers include Luke Meinzen of the United States Embassy in Manila (“The Role of Media and Government on Social Media”), Frameworks Institute’s Robert Shore (“Thematic Digital Storytelling for Social Change and Evaluating Social Media Impact”) There will a special presentation of climate change and the country’s response. Secretary Lucille Sering of the Philippine Climate Change Commission will talk on “Using Social Media for Social Change.” Another interesting item would be the social media networking/open forum, which will be facilitated by Dr. Cheryl Vilog, of the Research and Database Head of the Archdiocesan, Social Communication and Mass Media. Among the guest on stage will be Atty. Yves Gonzalez, Luke Meinzen, and Rob Shore. If you’re still at loss as to when this would happen, it will be on July 27, 2013 at the Finster Auditorium in Ateneo de Davao University. For more information, you may log-on to www.shift.org.ph. “Today, we are entering a new era of media where social and digital network connections truly are transforming how the world communicates, how business is conducted, and how people live their lives,” Shift Philippines said.
