This and the next page lists firms of solicitors who provide Specialist Help in particular areas of lawin the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames and surrounding areas.
“Specialist Help” means that the firm of solicitors (or law centre) can provide to you a full range oflegal services within the legal category for which they have CLS funding. This will mean that they can offer more than general advice, in effect such firms are able to deal withyour problem right from initial advice through to (and after) representing you in court or at a tribunal.
Note: law firms who only do criminal law, family law or immigration (or any combination of the 3)
and are not in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames are not included in this list (simply too

The information was obtained from the Community Legal Service (CLS) web site:
www.clsdirect.org.uk. CLS is the government organisation responsible for providing
funding to solicitors, CABx, Law Centres, etc.
How comprehensive is the information?
RLAS believes it covers most firms of solicitors in the London Borough of Richmond
upon Thames (LBRUT) and those in surrounding areas who provide CLS-funded
Specialist Help (this term is explained further down), subject to some restrictions as
described here:
1. There are many firms who provide legally aided specialist help in the following categories: crime, family and immigration. Firms are only listed in this category ifthey are no more than approx 2 miles from the boundaries of LBRUT; 2. Generally no firm (whatever type of legally aided specialist help) is listed if they are more than 5 miles from the boundaries of LBRUT. Why are only firms offering CLS-funded Specialist Help listed?
RLAS is only able to offer initial legal advice. It does not take cases on like a firm of
solicitors, and can only offer limited follow-up work (such as writing letters for a
client). Many clients cannot afford the cost of a solicitor but they are in need of
further legal advice and assistance (more than RLAS can offer), but cannot afford at
all or only to a limited extent a solicitor to act for them. The aim of this list is provide
details on firms which may be able to assist client who cannot afford to pay for a
solicitor but where a client needs more than general help.
Why you may not be entitled to receive CLS funding?
This could be for a number of reasons including:
3. The value of your home is worth more than a certain amount; 4. A firm of solicitors you contact is unable to take on any more cases in the area of law your problem relates to ( firms can only take-on a set number of new casesevery year—once they reach their limit they have to wait for the next year to startto on any new cases); 5. Your case is not considered strong enough by the firm of solicitors and/or the To determine whether you might be eligible for CLS-funded Specialist Help, the CLShas developed an internet-based calculator, which can be found at: http://www.legalservices.gov.uk/public/community_legal_advice.asp (click on “ligiblefor legal aid” link) What does “Specialist Help” mean?
The CLS define “Specialist Help” as follows:
“When you have a particularly complex problem. When you need to be represented in acourt (where this is possible). R I C H M O N D L E G A L A D V I C E S E R V I C E CLS Specialist Help providers offer advice and legal help on complex matters in specificareas of law. Specialist Help providers can provide representation in court, where this ispermitted. Specialist Help providers will have particular expertise in certain areas of law,which are shown in their entry in the Directory.” Most clients of RLAS who need more help than can be provided by RLAS will needthe help of a firm providing “Specialist Help”. Many advice agencies (such as CABx)offer General Hel,p a less detailed form of advice.
