RESULTS FACT SHEET
INDICATOR TR-B-4 & 5: TRAVEL SPEED AND AVERAGE TRAVEL TIME

DEFINITION - OBJECTIVE

The indicator of “travel speed” records the average speed of a route, including all delays. The speed limit is determined by the planning study of the motorway and the permitted speed limits. Therefore the speed, at which an average driver is moving at each section of the Motorway, can be calculated, using this specific indicator. The indicator “average travel time” calculates the average time-distance between two points (start – end of section), including any delay. Consequently, travel speed and average travel time differ in some sections, depending on the hour (rush hour-non rush hour).

RESULTS - ASSESSMENT

The counts pertain to the Egnatia Motorway sections that have been opened to traffic and also to the alternative network that serves traffic in sections that are under construction. Egnatia Motorway has been designed and constructed as a closed motorway, with two carriageways and one island, according to the international standards. Each carriageway consists of two traffic lanes and one emergency lane (E.L.), with the exception of the section between the Klidi I/C and the Lagadas-Serres I/C, that has three traffic lanes and one emergency lane (E.L.). This infrastructure allows the users to achieve and maintain high travel speed, hence a fastest travel time. In most of Egnatia Motorway sections, the current traffic volume is smaller than the capacity of the Motorway, so as the average speed is really close to the Design Speed (120km per hour) TR-B-4 & 5: TRAVEL SPEED AND AVERAGE TRAVEL TIME SPEED and TRAVEL TIME on the Egnatia Motorway and on the Alternative Road Network

(5) Includes part of the Egnatia Motorway, Part of the Provincial Road (Operational Egnatia) and part In the sections where Egnatia Motorway is not complete yet and the respective National Road or the respective provincial Road is being used (operational Egnatia) the average speed is really lower than the Design Speed (i.e. in the section between I/C Selles – I/C Dodoni. In the sections where the Provincial Road was used in 2006, the average speed did not exceed 53 km per hour. The total travel time from Igoumenitsa to Kipoi in 2006 (when 453 kilometers of Egnatia Motorway were open to traffic) was 8 hours and 15 minutes
