Clayton Elementary
October 2013 Newsletter

A Message from Mr. Dulin

Parents/Families of Clayton Elementary,
I would like to inform all that I have decided to retire and will no longer be principal at Clayton
Elementary. My final day is October 31st.
My years at Clayton Elementary have been very rewarding. Our students have been exceptional,
which is a tribute to you as parents and our entire staff at Clayton. I will miss the smiling faces
and hugs from the students each and every day. The district has posted the position, and a new
principal should be named around mid-October. I am confident that the new principal will continue
the success we have at Clayton Elementary.
I wish all continued success the remainder of this year, and all years ahead. Your children are very
fortunate to be part of the Smyrna School District.
Reminder – Please provide the school office with all updated court documents concerning visitation,
custody, etc. The office will follow the latest court order placed in the student’s file.
Nurses Notes – Mrs. Biddle, RN, BSN
Vision screenings for kindergarten are completed. If your child has not passed the first screening,
a second one will be done over the coming weeks to ensure accuracy.
For all students who do not pass the second screening, a referral slip will be sent home. Remember,
the testing here at school is just a screening. If a referral slip has been sent home, your child
needs to see an eye doctor for a more comprehensive exam. After your child is seen, please have
your doctor fill out the bottom portion of the referral and send this back to me.
If your child is followed by an eye doctor regularly, please indicate on the referral slip the last time
the child was seen, and send it back to school with your child.
For all students who do not pass the vision screening, and cannot afford a vision exam, please call
me! There are resources out there for this and no child should go without an exam or glasses if
they need them.
Flu season is upon us! Flu vaccines are readily available this year and I urge you to have your
children as well as yourselves vaccinated. This will hopefully help to decrease the number of sick
children and the number of lost school days.
Just a review about fevers: a fever is not an illness. Fever is an important symptom of an illness (a
temperature of 100.4 or above is considered a fever). Fevers generally occur along with a sore
throat, earache, nausea, listlessness, headache or rash. When a fever occurs, your child may be
carrying something contagious. If it is something viral, it may pass in a day or two. Most doctors
advise that children with fevers be kept home for an additional 24 hours after the last fever.
When they are fever free it needs to be without having received any Tylenol or Motrin. It is not
good practice to give Motrin or Tylenol to prevent fever; they should be used to treat it. Children
should also be kept home for an additional 24 hours after the last episode of vomiting or diarrhea.
Please continue to stress the importance of hand washing to your child! This is one of the best ways
to prevent the spreading of any disease.
Also, a reminder, please urge your child not to share hats, headbands, pony tail holders, pillows,
anything that may come in contact with their heads. This is the best preventative measure against
lice contamination.
Have a great fall, and Happy Halloween (a little early)!!
