Three of our classmates, John Shelby, Ed Garton, and Chuck Luton, have died of prostate cancer. It is not an easy death. In the cases of John and Ed, by the time a diagnosis was made, the cancer had already spread widely, and there was little that could be done other than ease the inevitable. Giving up cigarettes can be much harder for some smokers than others. Dr. Kirk Flury, a specialist in pulmonary medicine who helps with the smoking cessa-tion classes at St. Joseph Hospital of Kirkwood, says one-third to 40 percent of smokersare nicotine-dependent. “Even though they go through behavioral changes, they reach asignificant barrier to stopping smoking,” Flury said. “They havet
