we are pleased to invite you to the 3rd International Convention for Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology Students from Central Europe „ETHNOLOGY WITHOUT BORDERS” which in 2014 will be hosted by the Eötvös Loránd University inBudapest, Hungary.
The Convention has started off in 2012 with the intention of tightening the relationships and enhancing cooperation between students and academic centres in Central Europe. Our University is honored to be given the task of continuing this professional collaboration. Carrying on with the original concept of the convention, we wish to provide a meeting point for ethnology and anthropology students, offering them opportunity to present their subjects of interest andbring them to discussion with fellow students. We also welcome ethnology and anthropology professors from each partner institute to share their thoughts and experiences with us.
On the other hand, we wish to present an innovative element to the concept of the convention: we would like to set up a forum for dispute on various ethnological and anthropological issues, current topics which might be challenging and stimulating to discuss. Thus, we would like to transform the workshop section into a ground for discussion, where, instead of having presentations in a number of different topics, we would suggest a more or less fixed subject – which is still left open enough for each team to be able to bring and present their own ideas and interpretations. For next year’s convention, wesuggest the following topic for the workshops: „Sense and sensibility. Emotions on the field”. See more information below.
Considering the financial limitations of the event, and nevertheless our wish to invite as many institutions as possible, we came to agree upon announcing a competition where each team will send us their project plan for the workshops.
Our jury – consisting of professors as well as students – will choose the best 16 projects, and the respective teams will have the possibility to attend the convention having the accomodation fees covered by the organizers. All the other teams are welcomed to attend the convention, however, they need to cover their accomodation costs for themselves. Individual costs for 4 days (3 nights) should be approximately 20,000 HUF (70 Eur). We will send more exact information regarding the finances later.
In the following section of this paper you will find detailed information about the convention, the important deadlines, the documents you will need to send, as well as the application process for the competition.
We are looking forward to hearing from you. Unfortunately, other travel costs(both to and in Budapest) cannot be covered by the organisers.
OFFICIAL LANGUAGE OF THE CONVENTION:English SECTIONS OF THE CONFERENCE:I. Fieldwork achievments – Members of each team will have to present a paper concerning an ongoing or completed ethnological or anthropological research. This paper can be prepared by one or more students. We encourage you to share your research experiences, thus providing other students with useful information and inspiring ideas regarding your ethnological or anthropological fieldwork, your stimulating topics, as well as individual challenges and resolutions encountered during your research. Don’t forget that exchanging ideas about your fieldwork with other students might also leave you with a fresh perspective on your own research methods and results! II. Fieldwork plans - Members of each team will have to present a paper concerning a planned ethnological or anthropological research. This paper can be prepared by one or more students. Sharing your dreams and plans about a future fieldwork, as well as putting it up for debate might not only inspire others, but also provide you with useful tips and challenging thoughts. You might even find fellow students with the same dreams and aspirations as yourself! Note that presentations in both sections should be approximately 15 minutes long, followed by a short conversation. We will send more information about the presentations later.
III. Workshops„Sense and sensibility. Emotions in the field”Ethnologists and anthropologists have always had a unique status throughout their scientific inquiry. Standing outside and inside their field of research at the same time, as well as the need of being objective while not being able to completely escape subjectivity stands at the very core of these disciplines. In spite of this, subjectivity, personal bias or emotional/erotic envolvement in the research seems to be one of these disciplines’ taboos.
Througout the convention’s workshops, with the help of each of you, we wish to investigate the professional-ethical dilemmas aroused by this unique situation encontered by every ethnologist and anthropologist who chooses to go on the field. We suggest the following questions for you to think about and work up in your workshop projects: In what measure do ethnologists/anthropologists need to preserve objective vision upon their field experiences? In what measure do ethnologists/anthropologists need to (or are allowed to) bring their own personalities, convictions, biases or gender, sexuality and personal affections into their field research? Is it acceptable or even necessary for the researcher to be emotionally/erotically envolved with the people he or she explores? Can researchers escape their own personalities only to build up a new one in the field? What do we expect? Your thoughts, oppinions, interpretations. Case studies, personal accounts of experiences, artistic representations. Workshops can be organized in the form of presentations, round table discussions, debate, poster presentations or any kind of interactive or artistic representation of the given topic. We expect each team to send us a plan of their workshop projects by the given deadline. Our jury will select the best 16 projects and we will announce the results as soon as possible.
Contest applications can be sent via e-mail to the following address:

Deadline for contest applications: 10th of November, 2013
I. Letter of Intent – Since we have to send our grant application to the
International Visegrad Fund, we kindly ask every institute that considers
attending the convention to send us a letter of intent, formally declaring their
intention to actively participate in the project. If you wish to cancel your
attendance following the announcement of the competition’s results, you can
freely do so, your prior letter of intent thus not imposing any further obligations.
Your letter of intent should be written according to the following guidelines: The letter must be an original document printed on an official letterhead paper and signed by the partner institute’s statutory representative (Dean of the Faculty / Head of Department / Director of the Institute), and the student representative of the participating team, respectively. We cannot accept copies or scanned versions of this document, so we kindly ask you to send your letters via post to the following address: Murányi VeronikaKULTURÁLIS ANTROPOLÓGIA TANSZÉKELTE Társadalomtudományi Kar1117, Budapest, Pázmány Péter sétány 1/AHungary The letter must be in written in English. You should refer to the project by its official name: The 3rd International Convention for Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology Students from Central Europe „ETHNOLOGY WITHOUT BORDERS”.
In the letter you should formally declare your intention to participate in the project and briefly describe your role in it. You should mention every participant by name and indicate the section in which they will participate. Note that you will have the possibility to change the composition of your team later if necessary; the reason for us already asking the names is that we need to present a preliminary list of participants in our grant application.
II. Identification Documents – Every participant should send us a copy of a valid ID card or passport. For applicants from countries of the Visegrád Group (Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary) it is enough to send their identification documents in original language, while other participants should attach an English translation to their IDs (unofficial translation will be enough). Identification ducuments can be sent via e-mail to the following address: g_zsofia@yahoo.com Deadline for submitting the letters of intent and identification documents:
