COVERS 2013 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Think you’ve got what it takes to be music’s next superstar? Have questions about our Covers competition? We’re here to help! What is the prize? If your Act is one of the top 3 Finalist Acts, you will be featured in your own commercial and win a VIP trip to the 2013 MMVAs. If your Act wins the Covers MuchMusic Video Award, you will get a Singles Deal recording contract with Sony Music that includes a song release and music video, performance opportunities, and more! For the complete list, please read the Terms and Conditions. What exactly is a song ‘cover’? A song cover is a performance of a song that was first made popular by someone else. We have selected 6 of different songs for you to cover – choose 1, or cover them all! Use your own original ideas to change up the song’s style and make it your own, or sing it as it was recorded (but better). Stick to the song’s original lyrics, but make sure your rendition contains only your own original music and vocals. Still not sure you understand? Browse through the gallery of entries that we’ve got so far! Am I allowed to use the original music and sing over it? This isn’t karaoke! You cannot use the original soundtrack and sing over it; you are not able to use any of the original elements of the song. It’s up to you to recreate the song in your own way – perform the instrumentals acoustically, mix it up electronically, or even sing to no music at all. Can I change the lyrics? No. Please make sure you sing the song’s original lyrics only. Show us your creativity by changing up the way you sing the lyrics, but don’t change the words! We’ve provided the lyrics to each song to make sure you get it right. Do I have to cover the entire song? Nope! Cover as much or as little as you like. What is considered to be a duet? If you want to enter this competition and have a friend in your video with you, you can make him/her your partner and enter as a duet Act. Both of you can sing, or one can sing and the other plays an instrument, or one of you sings and one of you dances… there are endless possibilities! Note that entering as a duet is the ONLY way to enter with more than one person (yourself) appearing in your video, and even then, you are only allowed to have your partner in your video. If you create a duet Act profile, only you and your
partner can appear in those videos; if you have other friends that you’d like to make videos with, you will need to create a unique duet Act profile for each of those friends and submit any videos that feature them to that profile. Other than myself or my duet partner, can I include friends in my video? Unfortunately not! We are looking for ONE Act, so we want all the focus to be on you and your duet partner, if you have one. Only the members of the Act can be in the profile, i.e. you or, if applicable, you and your partner. If you have entered as a solo Act and want to submit a cover with your friend, make sure you create a separate duet Act profile for you and your friend and submit it there. I want to enter, but I can’t play an instrument. What do I do? We still want to see your talent! Why not sing a cappella? Show off the skills that you have, and don’t worry about the ones you don’t! Am I eligible to enter? If you’re a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant and at least 13 years old as of March 4, 2013, go ahead! Please note that, unfortunately, this competition is not open to residents of Quebec or to employees and their parents, siblings and children, and those domiciled with such employees, of Bell Canada Enterprises, Coca-Cola Ltd., Coca-Cola Refreshments Canada Company, and Sony Music Entertainment Canada, Inc. How many times can I enter? You can enter as many times as you want, as long as each entry is for a unique Act; each Act is considered unique as long as the duet partner is different. For example, you can enter as a solo artist, plus several duets with different duet partners. You cannot enter (create a profile) by yourself or with the same partner more than once, because those would be considered duplicate Acts. I am currently signed to a label. Am I allowed to enter? Nope. We are looking for undiscovered talent – an amateur Act that we can support all the way to the top. Do I need to agree to Terms and Conditions and Personal Release before I enter? Yes. You (and your partner, if you have one) MUST read and understand the official contest Terms and Conditions before you enter the competition, and you must also agree to the Personal Release. Please note that, if you are under the age of majority, it is your responsibility to ensure that your parent or legal guardian has also read and agreed to both documents, and note that this will be verified by MuchMusic if you are selected to move on in the competition. If you are under the age of 16, you will be required to submit the email address of your parent or legal guardian and have that person click an activation link in order to complete your contest entry. This is a best practice that MuchMusic employs to protect its youngest contest entrants. After I agree to the Terms and Conditions and Personal Release, will I need to agree to anything else? If you are chosen to move forward in the competition, you may be required to provide more documents and agree to more releases. For example, Semi-Finalists will need to provide government-issued photo identification, and Finalists will need to agree to a deal with Sony Music Entertainment Canada. For more information on this, please read the Terms and Conditions. When is the entry deadline? You have until Sunday, April 21st to create your profile and submit videos. You should enter sooner rather than later, though, because you’ll want your videos to get a ton of ratings so that the judges will notice you! Can I change my videos once they’ve been submitted? Unfortunately you cannot. Make sure your submissions count, because you’ll be stuck with them. :P Why was my video not approved? Your video may be rejected if it:
> Contains a song that is not one of the approved Covers songs.
> Is not linked to the correct song (for example, if you perform a Neyo cover but submit it in the
> Contains another person other than yourself or your duet partner, if you have one.

> Contains profanity, defamatory or obscene content or includes themes of hate and/or violence.

> You have already created a profile for that Act.

> You are not a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant.
> You are, or are related to, a Bell, Coke, or Sony employee, as is clarified in the Terms and

Much producers reserve the right to remove a profile at any time for any reason whatsoever. What is the process of the whole competition? This is the Casting Call, where the competition is open from now until Sunday April 21 for everyone to enter, submit song covers, and rate other song covers. Then we select the top 10 Semi-Finalists, which will then be narrowed down to the top 3 Finalists, who will come to Toronto to attend the MMVAs as VIPs. The winner will be announced at the 2013 MMVAs on Sunday, June 16! How will the Semi-Finalists, Finalists, and winner be chosen? All entrants will be given a score based on the musical skill and creativity displayed in their submissions, as well as their ability to connect with the public. The entrants with the highest scores will move forward into each following round! How will I know if I’ve made the top 10 Semi-Finalists? Much producers will contact you via phone, in the first few days after April 21st. During that time, make sure you’ve always got your phone with you! Do YouTube views, comments and ‘thumbs up’ count? No, interaction on YouTube does not count. Can I delete my profile or entry? You are not able to delete any video entry. If for some reason you wish to remove yourself from the competition, please email us at connect@bellmedia.ca, including COVERS PROFILE REMOVAL in the subject line, and we will take down your profile. Please note that once you send us this email, you will have officially forfeited the competition – your profile will be taken down and you will not be able to enter again. Please see the official competition Terms and Conditions and Personal Release for more details. If you have any further questions that have not been answered above, please ask us by emailing connect@bellmedia.ca and including COVERS QUESTION in the email’s subject line.
