Patient Procedure Guidelines
Arm and Chest Port insertion and removal: (Ordering Physician)
Send signed order specifying arm or chest port, history and physical, recent labs including platelet count, and list of meds to FAX 765-9955. Patient must be NPO for 6 hours prior to procedure in order to receive IV Conscious Sedation. Oral meds may be taken with water. Patient must bring driver and will be instructed not to drive for 24 hours post sedation. If possible, hold Coumadin and Plavix for 5-7 days, hold Aggrenox for 3 days, and hold Lovenox for 24 hours. The Lake Imaging Center nurse will call the patient prior to the procedure to review instructions. The patient must not eat or drink for 6 hours prior to procedure in order to receive sedation medication. The nurse will review the patient’s meds and discuss with the patient which meds can be taken with water prior to the procedure. If the patient is on blood thinners, the nurse will discuss with the patient if these meds can be held prior to the port insertion. Do not take insulin the morning of the procedure. The patient must bring a driver and will be instructed not to drive for 24 hours after sedation. Port procedures may be done without sedation at the patient’s request. A local numbing medicine will be given at the port insertion site so that the patient is comfortable for the procedure. Inform the nurse if you have a pacemaker, have had a previous port, or have had breast surgery. The procedure will usually take about one hour and the patient will be in recovery for 30 minutes after. The patient is encouraged to avoid strenuous activity for 24 hours after the procedure. Wear comfortable clothing. Call the nurse at 765-3221 if you have any questions. Epidural Steroid Injection, Facet/Nerve Block: (Ordering Physician)
